Discover the heart of inclusion, community and hope in Zipolite
Hidden in the heart of Zipolite, Piña Palmera has been changing lives since 1984. Founded by Frank Douglas, the organization began as a safe space for people with disabilities, women, and children, growing into one of the community’s most important organizations. In 1986, Ana Johansson joined the project, helping expand its programs and strengthen its mission of inclusion, independence, and hope.

Built with nature in mind, the campus reflects Piña Palmera’s values. Adobe buildings, lush gardens, and accessible spaces create an environment where people can learn new skills, gain confidence, and build greater independence. What was once a swamp has been transformed into thriving gardens filled with corn, coconuts, pineapples, and native plants.

A community that gives back
Over the years, Piña Palmera has extended its impact far beyond Zipolite. In 1994 the center established it Community Based Inclusion under the guidance of Flavia Anau. Outreach teams travel to surrounding communities to provide education, therapy, and support for families who often have little access to specialized services. The organization has also opened its doors to children and adults requiring full-time care, creating a safe and welcoming home for those who need it most.
After Hurricane Paulina struck the coast in 1997, Piña Palmera continued serving the community, rebuilding with resilience while sharing knowledge, compassion, and hope.
Today, the organization offers a wide range of programs that promote sustainability, creativity, and independence. Workshops produce cold-pressed coconut oil, natural soaps, lotions, and cosmetics using ingredients grown on-site. A paper recycling studio transforms discarded paper into beautiful handmade cards, journals, and artwork, while the woodworking shop creates wheelchair adaptations alongside handcrafted artisan pieces sold in the campus store.
Their rehabilitation and physical therapy programs work closely with individuals and families, providing tools and support to improve mobility, confidence, and quality of life. Every staff member and volunteer is trained to provide thoughtful, compassionate care, helping participants reach their fullest potential.
Every visit helps support a community with a truly big heart.
Piña Palmera is a remarkable example of what community can achieve through empathy, inclusion, and perseverance. If you’re visiting Zipolite, stop by their shop to support their work by purchasing handmade artesanías, natural products, and locally crafted goods. You can also join one of their public workshops to learn a new skill while directly supporting an organization that has been making a difference for more than four decades.
